Happy Blogmas Day 17! I’m going to talk today about a guilty confession that I have.
I hope my co-workers don’t see this post because that would totalllly judge me for it and there is even past of me that judges myself.
So I caved and got a planet fitness membership *sighs in fitness guru*. In my hometown we have two gyms, now. The first one is the YMCA where I was previously a member at (and still technically am) and a new Planet Fitness where I’m still not 100% sure about yet. All other gyms are 20+ minutes away and I’m not trying to drive any extra on my day off if we’re being honest here.. I drive two hours on the days that I work and that’s enough for me. But that’s not the guilty confession here..
The guilty confession lies within the membership that I decded to go with. Instead of doing the $10 one.. I went with the $20 which has a lot more added benefits on paper, including bringing a friend for free.. And tanning.. Whoop there it is.
The reason why I pin this as a guilty confession is because of the fact that I am a huge supporter of breast cancer awareness, even committing to dying my hair pink for the month of October. Yet, breast cancer is only the SECOND leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. The first being.. You guessed it.. Skin cancer.
Growing up in my town tanning was completely normalized, my girl friends would go all the time after high-school before changing the age requirements to 18 and older. People would go after soccer all the time. I hardly ever tanned because I’m so fair skinned and burn easily and never really felt like I tanned. Just white, burn, peel, repeat. That’s how sun tanning goes anyway.. I recently turned to self tanner but it still doesn’t make me feel.. Tan. I have used spray tanning also, which is wonderful and gives GREAT color! (@otg_glow) I have this girl who comes to my house and sprays me! I don’t even have to leave my home!
But anyway, This isn’t all about being tan.. It’s feeling tan and not only that it’s the UV rays. Did you know that UV rays/Sunlight can have an effect on your mental health and happiness? There’s some evidence that UV light can push “melanocytes” (the cells that produce dark pigment in skin) to release endorphins, a feel-good chemical. Light therapy can improve mood in people with SAD in a few days although it may take several weeks for light have an effect on non-seasonal depression. I felt that. I didn’t even know light therapy was a thing and I’m still not 100% sure on how it works but I know for a fact I simply feel more energized after tanning and I’m only allowed to tan for a 4 minutes at a time.
This doesn’t take away the fact that I’m terrified of cancer in any form and getting it. I only do it maybe once a week for four minutes, I may end up increasing my time as it goes on but I would never get excessive with it. Don’t worry.. I promise I’m going to be careful.
What is your guilty pleasure? Do you think tanning is a bad idea? Let me know your thoughts!
